There are different sizes and types of lawn aerators in the market today. Before we look at the factors to consider before purchasing a lawn aerator, let’s have understand why it is important to undertake aeration in the first place. Why should you be aerating your lawn? The main purpose of having to aerate your lawn is to enable the air and water to penetrate the soil. For a better germination rate when you want to reseed your lawn, aeration is the best way to achieve this. Another advantage of doing the soil aeration is that it helps with managing the lawn. When the lawn is aerated, the fertilizer and water applied will easily be absorbed by the roots of the grass. For water-logging issues, regular aeration helps the ground to take in more water, thereby improving the health of the grass. Where there is a lot of traffic either human or animal, the lawn would require regular aeration for better results. Lastly, for the clay soil, regular aeration will help get a healthier lawn. There are different types of aerators that will be discussed below. Aeration shoes. They are very common for a small lawn. The shoes are fitted with spikes and straps. The main purpose of the straps is to secure the movement. Depending with the specific model, the spikes can be detached from the shoes. For some lawns that are too dry or clay-like, consider using the electric aerators. Roller spike aerators. These can be either automated or manual. It all depends with your preference. What I like most about them is that they are affordable and effective. They have spikes that are organized on a rolling surface that has a steering handle. They are best for damp soil or soft soil conditions. While using them you can find it difficult to penetrate hard lawn. When compared to a handheld spike aerator, they make the work easier since they are lightweight and have a handle. Hallowed tine aerators. They are handheld and are mostly used in a small lawn and for reseeding. The tins are hollow and therefore, they can extract compound cores. They have better aeration holes and are perfect for hardened soil and clay soil. Plug aerator using electric or petrol modes. They are perfect for a large lawn where manual aerators cannot be used. They are easy to use and are more expensive.
